Stage 2 (5 July) ran 178 km from Tarragona back to Barcelona, and Stage 3 (6 July) took the peloton 196 km from Granollers into the French Pyrenees, finishing uphill at Les Angles. Tour de France 2026: Favourites, Jerseys and Storylines

The 2026 Tour was billed as a generational battle, and it delivered. Tadej Pogačar arrived as the defending champion and overwhelming favourite, chasing a historic fifth Tour de France title — and he achieved it, sealing the yellow jersey in Paris ahead of Remco Evenepoel and his own teammate Isaac del Toro. Pogačar’s fifth triumph drew him level with the all-time greats: Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Induráin.

Jonas Vingegaard, the two-time champion, led the challenge alongside Evenepoel, while young talents and breakaway specialists animated the transitional stages. The final jersey standings told the story of an aggressive race: Mads Pedersen won the green points jersey, Richard Carapaz took the polka-dot mountains classification, and Isaac del Toro claimed the white jersey as best young rider to go with his podium finish. The final stage into Paris — featuring the Montmartre finale — was won by Mathieu van der Poel.

The Barcelona opening was a triumph in itself: enormous crowds for the team time trial and the Montjuïc finish, with the Catalan capital hosting its first Grand Départ since 2009. How to Watch the Tour de France 2026 on Every Device

Smartphone and tablet: The ITVX app (UK), SBS On Demand (Australia), france.tv (France) and Peacock (US) are all free or freemium apps for iOS and Android. A full stage can run five hours — at roughly 1.5 GB per hour in HD, that is a lot of data, so Wi-Fi is strongly recommended for full-stage viewing.

Smart TV and streaming sticks: ITVX, SBS On Demand and the other broadcaster apps are available on smart TVs, Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast. The Tour is glorious on the big screen — helicopter shots of the peloton snaking through the Pyrenees deserve it.

Laptop and desktop: Watch via the broadcaster’s web player, and keep the official letour.fr live tracker open in a second tab for GPS positions, time gaps and climb profiles in real time. It is the next best thing to being in the team car.

Travelling abroad: Broadcaster streams are geo-restricted, so fans away from home commonly used a VPN set to their home country to keep their free coverage. See our guide to the best VPNs for live sports streaming in 2026 for options fast enough for five hours of live HD cycling.

Practical Tips for Following Three Weeks of Racing Free

You don’t need to watch every kilometre. The decisive action usually comes in the final 30–60 km. Tune in for the last two hours on mountain stages and the final hour on flat stages.
Use highlights strategically. ITV’s nightly highlights show (UK) condensed each stage into a superb hour — perfect for busy days. Free highlights were also posted after every stage.
Follow the jersey battles, not just the yellow. The green, polka-dot and white jersey competitions, plus the stage-win hunters, keep every day interesting even when the overall classification is settled.
Keep the live tracker handy. When you can’t watch video, the GPS tracker and live text commentary keep you in the race — our best free live score apps and sites for 2026 cover cycling trackers too.
Prevent buffering on mountain finishes. Millions tune in for Alpe d’Huez — if your stream stutters at the crucial moment, our buffering fixes for live sports will help, starting with dropping to 720p.
Stick to official streams. Pirate cycling streams are unreliable and often malware-laden. With ITV4, SBS and France TV all free, there is no need to risk them — see our 9 safety tips for watching live sports online.
